ICT and Climate Change Side Event during World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-08)
Johannesburg, South Africa, 24 October 2008 Contact: tsbworkshops@itu.int
Introduction
Unequivocal and authoritative scientific evidence has elevated climate change to the highest level of the political agenda – globally, regionally and nationally. It is estimated that ICTs contribute around 2.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but will grow as ICTs become more widely available. At the same time, ICTs can be a major player in efforts to combat climate change and serve as a potent, cross-cutting tool to limit and then to reduce GHG emissions across all economic and social sectors.

The ITU recently organized two symposia (15-16 April 2008, Kyoto, Japan and 17-18 June 2008, London, UK). As a follow up, based on the expectations of the ITU-T Membership, on 11 July 2008 TSAG established the ITU-T Focus Group on ICTs and Climate Change.
Objectives
The WTSA side event on ICT and Climate Change will provide an overview of ITU-T activities on the topics, the concerns of member states and sector members, and will be a forum for the Membership to discuss the role of standardization in efforts to achieve a climate neutral ICT industry.
