Kanyashree with its e-governance portal www.wbkanyashree.gov.in , designed and implemented by the Department of Women & Child Development & Social Welfare, Govt of West Bengal, India is a Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme that seeks to reverse the high incidence of child marriage and low retention in education of girls between the ages of 13 to 18 years in West Bengal. (“Kanya” means daughter & ”Shree” means prosperity). It is a child protection system for the Government to ensure girl children having vulnerable socio-economic background enrolled in educational institutions, remains within a safety net, prevented from getting married till they reach the age of 18, empowered through continued IEC & financially included to live life on their own terms. Linkages with skill development programmes ensures economic empowerment too. Kanyashree Online 4.0 is the e-governance mechanism of the programme. In a span of 40 months, 4.0 million adolescent Girls are enrolled under the scheme.
