Information about the project
ICT for Sustainable Fishing
e-fishing
Over the past decade, the fishing industry in Ghana has been plagued with depletion of the fishery resources resulting in the loss of livelihoods for the almost three million people within the value chain. This sharp decline has compelled fishermen, particularly artisanal fishermen to resort to unorthodox fishing practices including light fishing, fishing with chemicals, explosives and using unapproved fishing nets with attendant effect on fish stocks and ultimately food security. To reverse the trend, GIFEC is promoting the use of technologies that is stabilizing the rate of depletion and encouraging responsible fishing with the goal of achieving food security.
